The tale of two mindsets

“You are the storyteller of your own life, and you can create your own legend or not.” – Isabel Allende

There are two kinds of people: those who believe, ‘life happens to me’ and those who have the mindset of, ‘I create my life.’

There are radical and clear differences between these two points of view. The person who believes that life just happens to them tends to take no responsibility for their life. They display low self-esteem, constantly blame others, regularly complain and view most things negatively – their glass is always half empty. Through the law of attraction, this draws more negativity into their life and, as a result, this person gets rooted with a negative attitude to most situations.

The person who has the powerful mindset that they create their life is totally different. They take full responsibility for their life and actions. They are committed to achieving success and happiness. They don’t blame others and seldom complain. This person is powerfully driven by optimism, and gets great satisfaction from inspiring others. They see most things as possible and, because of these positive thoughts, attract and magnify success, happiness, and have an extraordinary quality of life. They ooze positive vibes and energy.

The good news is that each of these two differing mindsets is a choice. Even the person who believes that life just happens to them, and that they have no choice, has actually CHOSEN to believe this.

Do you have total control over your thoughts? Your mind is a very powerful tool. The way you think determines everything that happens to you, so your thoughts are extremely powerful. If you believe this, then it stands to reason that, if we manage and develop our thoughts in a positive and constructive manner, we have a better chance of building and creating the mental foundation that can change our lives forever.

Why are our thoughts vital to this process of manifesting positive outcomes in our lives? Allow me to introduce you to a very important formula: the T-F-A-R formula. Start with positive thoughts. This positivity will generate positive feelings. These feelings lead to positive actions, and these subsequent actions lead to positive results. So your thinking is the vital key, and how you apply that thinking manifests itself through feelings and actions that produce your results.

You – and only you – control your thoughts. Only you can think your thoughts, and only you decide what you dwell upon. You can, in an instant, commit to the thought, ‘I wish to change my mind,’ and build your life in a positive way.

Here are six things you can immediately do to harness the power of positive thinking:

  • Take charge of your thinking. Become more aware of your thoughts. Are they positive? Ask yourself whether they serve you and, more importantly, do they help and serve others? Choose to think uplifting thoughts instead of discouraging ones. Your current thoughts are creating your future life. What you think about or focus on the most will appear as your life.
  • Believe in yourself. Immediately resolve to accept 100 percent responsibility for who you are and who you ever will be. Don’t make excuses, make progress.
  • Focus on action. Create a ‘success plan’ for yourself. Keep a journal of your goals and how you plan to achieve and maintain the mindset of a person who successfully manages their life. Read inspirational books and articles, listen to personal-effectiveness CDs, and surround yourself with people who give you inspiration and energy. These actions will charge you with positive energy
  • Develop an attitude of gratitude. When you're grateful for what you currently have in your life, it focuses you on the best, and you attract more of the best. So when you have a lack of gratitude in your life, you're probably focusing on the worst. A state of gratefulness acts as an antidote to negative feelings. Try this, it is a powerful tool.
  • Connect with others. The world is becoming a disconnected place. We communicate overly via email and sms. Make an effort to really engage and connect with family members, colleagues and the many other people you come into contact with each day. Become a friendlier customer!
  • Be proactive about your health and fitness. It is hard to maintain a positive mindset if you neglect your health. Great mental energy and health comes from a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. You feel more positive when you feel healthier. Remember that you are only one meal away from committing to a healthier lifestyle.

In conclusion, you and you alone can make the decision to positively manage your moment-by-moment thoughts and emotions. So refocus your brain to habitually and instinctively form more positive and empowering patterns of thought. To quote a statement I regularly use in many of my columns and seminars, ‘Positive thinking will always allow you to do anything better than negative thinking will.’ I wish you every success in your quest to live a greater life with an extraordinary mindset. The moment you begin to ‘think properly’, the amazing powers that lie within you will awaken.

‘It is funny about life: if you refuse to accept anything but the very best you will very often get it’. – W Somerset Maugham
